REGIMENTAL HISTORY: Originally known as the 40th, it was composed principally of German citizens from Philadelphia. It was mustered into U.S. service at Camp Worth, Philadelphia in Aug. and Sept. 1861 for three years. Sept. 26, 1861 left for Washington (800 strong) and once there its ranks were recruited to the maximum number. Assigned to Blenker’s division. Wintered in Hunter’s Chapel. March 1862 it moved with the army on the general advance reaching Warrenton Junction on the 26th when it was ordered to report with its division to Gen. Fremont. Encamped in Winchester from April 18 to May 6.
It was in pursuit of Stonewall Jackson and was assigned to the 2nd brigade, 3rd division, 1st corps (Gen. Sigel), Army of Virginia. At 2nd Bull Run it was in Groveton. It did not engage in battle until the Battle of Chancellorsville in 1863. It remained there until June when it left for Gettysburg, arriving there July 1. It moved to Bridgeport, Alabama after Sept. 24 on its way to Tenn. It joined the 3rd brigade. Fought around Chattanooga on Nov. 22. On Jan 2, 1864 it reenlisted as a veteran organization. It was back in Nashville by the end of July 1864. It was chiefly engaged in guarding trains, scouting and provost duty. It was mustered out of service at Murfreesboro, Tenn., Sept. 1, 1865.

So far, have learned that the 95th Pa. Served as the rear guard for the Union troops retreating after Second Manassas. Company H was definitely in Fairfax CH Sept. 21-3, 1862. The regiment apparently did not take part in the Battle of Chantilly (Ox Hill), which occurred on September 1.

The 114th Pennsylvania Infantry was organized on August 1, 1862 in Philadelphia left for Washington, D.C. on 8/31 where its organization was completed. Co. A had already served as the Zouaves d’Afrique, which was mustered into U.S. service on Aug. 17, 1861. At Gen. Banks suggestion a Zouave regiment was organized and the 114th was the result. This regiment was held in Washington and assigned to the 1st brigade, 1st division, 3rd corps. In October, it joined the corps at Poolesville, moved to Falmouth, fought at Fredericksburg, shared in the “Mud March” and went into camp near Potomac Creek. It was active at Chancellorsville…returned to Falmouth. ….It was in Gettysburg, then moved into Virginia with the arms; engagements followed during the fall and winter at Wapping Heights, Kelly’s Ford, Auburn and Rappahannock Station; winter quarters at Brandy Station. It was in the Wilderness campaign and continued on duty at headquarters at Petersbur until March 15, 1865, when it was ordered to City Point for picket duty for a fortnight. In the final assault on Petersburg April 2, it won the intrenchments opposite Fort Hell, sustaining severe loss. Returning to Washington after the surrender, it was mustered out of the service on May 29, 1865.

The Fourth Regiment of Cavalry was also organized as First Regiment, German Cavalry; Dickel’s Mounted Rifles; Lincoln Greens (Three Years).
The regiment was organized at New York City; mustered in the service of the United States for three years, between August 10 and November 15, 1861, and designated by the State authorities the 4th Regiment of Cavalry. The companies were recruited principally: A, D, E, F, G, I and K at New York City; B and C at Yonkers; H at Cleveland, Ohio and New York City; L at New York City, Brooklyn, Stuyvesant, Kinderhook and Poughkeepsie; and M at new York City and Brooklyn. Captain John McDonnell’s company was recruited at Philadelphia, PA; Captain de Rosencrantz’s company at New York City.
The regiment (eight companies) left the State August 29, 1861, and served in Blenker’s Division, Army of the Potomac, from September, 1861; in 5th Corps, Army of the Potomac, from September, 1862; in Mountain Department from April, 1862; in the Cavalry Brigade, 1st Division, 11th Corps, Army of the Potomac, from September 1862; in the 1st Brigade, 2d Division, Cavalry Corps, Army of the Potomac, from February 1863; in the 1st Brigade, 3d Division, Cavalry, Army of the Potomac, from May, 1863; in 2d Brigade, 2d Division, Cavalry, Army of the Potomac, from June 14, 1863; and in the 2d Brigade, 1st Division, Cavalry Corps, Army of the Potomac, from August 12, 1863; with the Army of the Potomac detached from the Cavalry Corps, in May, 1864; with the Cavalry Corps again toward end of May, 1864; in the Army of the Shenandoah from October, 1864.
February 27, 1865, the battalion commanded by Maj. Edward Schwartz was transferred to the 9th N.Y. Volunteer Cavalry, Company F becoming its Company E, the members of Company K being transferred to Companies B, E, H, M and L, Company L becoming L, and M Company B, of the same.

1st Regiment Michigan Cavalry 1861-1866
(Excerpts from Don and Lois Harvey’s report):
The 1st Cavalry commenced recruiting on August 21, 1861 at Camp Lyon, near Detroit. Under Colonel Thornton F. Brodhead it was mustered into U.S. service on the 13th of September, wit 1144 officers and men on its rolls. It left camp on the 29th of September and proceeded to Washington, D.C.
They camped in Frederick MD, for much of the winter; its principal service being on the Upper Potomac River, in the Shenandoah Valley and near Eastern slopes of the Blue Ridge Mts. In February 1862, General Banks was in command of the Union troops to MD side of the Potomac, the Regiment composed a part of this force. They guarded the Potomac line from Manassas Junction to Washington, City. The First marched to Charlestown, Berryville (March 10) and towards Winchester. They were attacked at Kernstown by Stonewall Jackson; they retreated back to the Potomac opposite Williamsport where they remained untl June 12th. They then entered VA reaching Front Royal on the 16th. They fought at Orange Court House, July 16th, then at Cedar Mountain on August 9. Moved to Centreville at the 2nd Battle of Manassas on August 30th, losing 7 men killed, 13 wounded, 7 captured with 106 missing. Colonel Brodhead was wounded and died the following September 5th.
Early 1863, engaged in guard duty in front of the defenses of Washington, from Edward’s Ferry to the mouth of the Opequan. The Regiment was reassigned to the Michigan Brigade at the end of June.

26th Wisconsin infantry Regiment was organized at Camp Sigel, Milwaukee, WI, and mustered into the service of the United States on the 17th day of September, 1862. It left the state October 6th and proceeded directly to Washington, D.C. The regiment moved to Fairfax Court House, VA, October 15 and was assigned to service in the Eleventh Army Corps. It was among the reserve force at Fredericksburg, VA, December 15, 1862, was in the Chancellorsville, Campaign April 27-May 6, 1863, and in the battle of Chancellorsville May 1-3. It was engaged in the Gettysburg Campaign June 11-July 4, and in the battle of Gettysburg July 1-3, 1863. In September, 1863, went to the vicinity of Chattanooga, and participated in the battle of Wauhatchie near Lookout Mountain October 28-29; Missionary Ridge, November 25th and in the movement for the relief of Knoxville, November 27-December 8, 1863.
The 26th was assigned to the 20th Army Corps after the reorganization of the Army of the Cumberland in 1864 and continued a part of the army under General Sherman, participating in the Atlanta Campaign May1-Sept. 8, 1864; Savannah Campaign November 15-December 21, 1864 and the Campaign of the Carolinas. After the surrender of the Confederates under Gen. Joseph E. Johnston near Raleigh, NC, April 26, 1865, marched to Washington and took part in the Grand Review. The regiment was mustered out of service June 13, 1865. It reached Milwaukee on the 17th and was disbanded June 29, 1865.
